Ontario Study of Trails

The Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport has retained SPR Associates to conduct a confidential province-wide survey of trail users (and non-users) to aid the development of trails and assess their contribution to Ontario's tourism and recreation sectors and the economy generally, and to assess the impacts of trail use on individual's health.

The scope of the study encompasses Ontario's system of over 80,000 kilometers of trails for the enjoyment of Ontario residents  and visitors. These trails are used for walking/ hiking/ jogging, cycling (on and off-road), mountain biking, horseback riding, off-road motorcycling, snowmobiling, ATVing, canoeing/kayaking, 4x4 use and other activities. Trails are located in urban, suburban, rural and remote areas across Ontario. The study includes both short term trips (jogging, dog-walking) and longer term, multi-day trips on trails.

If you would like members of your community, or users of your parks and trails included in the survey, or if you would like more information, please contact the project director by early February at the latest: Dr. Ted Harvey at ted.harvey@spr.ca, referencing the subject “Information on the Ontario Trails Study”
