The Roads, Parks and Fleet Department is comprised of five Branches; Administration, Traffic and Parking, Parks and Forestry, Roads and Rail; and Fleet Services. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s public works infrastructure and systems including roadways; rail, storm drainage systems; waste water collection; winter control; parks and green spaces; signals and streetlights; parking operations; transportation planning and the corporation’s fleet of vehicles and equipment.
Under the general guidance and direction of the Horticulture Foreperson, the Gardener position is responsible for the maintenance of all the annual and perennial plants in the City of Barrie. Specifically, this position performs and oversees staff in the planting, pruning, cultivating, watering and fertilizing of flower beds located in the City’s parks, downtown areas, reverse lot frontages and right of ways. Additionally, this position performs greenhouse maintenance duties in accordance with seasonal requirements. Overall, this position plays an integral role in the upkeep of the City’s parks and other outdoor areas by carrying out horticultural activities and maintaining the City’s gardens.

- Two (2) year College Diploma in Horticulture or related discipline
- Landscape Exterminator Licence from the Ontario Ministry of Environment Greenhouse/Interior Plant Exterminator Licence from the Ontario Ministry of Environment
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Location: Operations Centre, 165 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie
Hours: Normal hours of work are 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with overtime required occasionally.
Wage: This is a Level-5 position in the CUPE Local 2380 bargaining unit with a 2017 pay range of $58,052.80 per year to $69,534.40 per year ($27.91/hr to $33.43/hr).
- Two (2) years of horticultural experience performing duties related to the above mentioned major responsibilities
- General knowledge of greenhouse operations including propagation and growing techniques
- Working knowledge of parks and horticulture and irrigation operating systems
- Demonstrated ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including the ability to lift up to 25 kg
