CURATOR/INSTRUCTOR (VEGETABLE & ROSE GARDEN) 

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Superintendent with established policies, procedures and guidelines, curates the selected areas within the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens. In conjunction with the Botanical Gardens Manager, ensures specimens are maintained according to policy, monitors and oversees instructional aspects of maintenance of selected plant specimens and landscapes. Instructs and evaluates full-time students in horticulture skills and techniques. Directs Park’s staff, co-op students, interns and volunteers. Under the general direction of the Assistant Superintendent, instructs and evaluates full-time students in academic courses and assists the development of curriculum and policy for school. 

Qualifications: 

Education: Completion of a Bachelor of Science Degree or a three (3) year Horticulture Diploma and relevant botanical gardens and/or horticultural industry experience. Knowledge of instructional education requirements. Knowledge of Landscape Architecture and/or Design techniques associated with the Horticulture Industry. Having an extensive knowledge of industrial and horticultural safety practices and the Occupational Health & Safety Act. Valid Standard First Aid and CPR certificates. Extensive working knowledge of ornamental plant culture and maintenance. Valid Landscape Exterminators License. Additional certifications in related horticulture trades are also an asset.

Experience: Five (5) years of related management/supervisory experience in the horticulture industry, plus three (3) years teaching experience. Demonstrated experience in selection, knowledge and use of vegetables and fruit, herbs, roses and other herbaceous and woody plants. Knowledge of and experience with design principles related to public garden spaces and an ability to approach garden development creatively. Demonstrated experience with annual and seasonally designed expositions. Knowledge of and experience in IPM and plant health care practices. Ability to strategically plan, organize and direct the work of students, co-ops, parks staff interns and volunteers. Organizational skills with the ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and horticultural industry professionals. Position takes hands on approach to actively instruct students within the Botanical Gardens and School of Horticulture. A successful Police Information Check is required for the selected candidate. 

Niagara Parks offers a pay range of $27.61 to $31.05 per hour as well as a comprehensive benefit and pension plan.
