ARBORIST - TEMPORARY

Community Services Department – Public Works Operations Division

(Temporary: July 2016 to December 2016)

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; 40 Hour Work Week

Assisting the Urban Forestry team in performing various arboricultural tasks, the Arborist will maintain, prune, plant and remove municipal trees in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Town policies and procedures and industry Arboriculture practices. You may be requested to respond to emergency situations after normal working hours.

Minimum qualifications include a college diploma in arboriculture or a related discipline; a minimum of two years of arboriculture experience including the ability to work aloft using a rope saddle and must be competent in the operation of various pieces of arboriculture equipment including aerial devices, light duty cranes, chippers and stumpers. In addition:

  • An Electrical Utilities Safety Association Electrical Awareness Certificate or equivalent is required
  • A certificate of Apprenticeship or Qualification from the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities in the Trade of Arborist would be an asset
  • A International Society of Arboriculture Tree Climber Certification would be an asset
  • Land Exterminator License including the following Land Licenses: Landscape and Industrial Vegetation would be an asset
  • A working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Physically and medically able and competent to perform the physical demands of this position under adverse weather and site conditions
  • Good communication skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively with coworkers and the public and work well with minimum supervision
  • Must be able to meet the requirements of “standby” in accordance with the provisions of the CUPE Collective Agreement
  • Possess a Ontario Class “DZ” driver’s license in good standing and you must be able to provide a current satisfactory Ontario driver abstract from the M.T.O.
  • The shifts and hours are subject to change at management’s discretion in accordance with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (C.U.P.E.) collective agreement
  • The successful candidate will be required to pass a vulnerable sector screening within one month of commencing employment. This position is a member of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (C.U.P.E.). Please note: selected qualified candidates will be required to complete written test and practical climbing test as part of the selection process. HOURLY RATE: $28.87 - $30.31 (C.U.P.E.)
