As the Horticultural Supervisor, you will be responsible for maintaining the City’s horticultural services to meet City Standards. You will be working as a team member with other Parks Supervisors within Parks Operations & Forestry to deliver Parks programs, including winter snow removal. You will also be responsible for the supervision and scheduling of assigned staff; ensuring Corporate and Occupational Health and Safety provisions are met. You will perform routine inspections of planting beds, barrels, planters, as well as streetscapes. You will coordinate and schedule staff and equipment for partnership programs and special events; prepare contracts and tender specifications, supervise maintenance of departmental equipment, make purchases, respond to inquiries and address concerns from the public, contractors’ staff and liaise with same as required. You will be required to act as a Department representative with community groups, organizations and to serve on various committees as well as uphold and enforce City and Department policies and procedures.
With your Community College Diploma in Landscape Technology, Horticulture, or suitable equivalent as well as a current holder of Ministry of Environment Landscape license and/or Water - (Mosquito/Biting Fly), Ministry of Environment Landscape Pesticide Licenses, and knowledge of current weed spraying regulations and knowledge of current Integrated Pesticide Management (IPM) practices, you will likely have a minimum of five (5) years progressively more responsible municipal park maintenance experience. Your experience will include a minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience preferably in a unionized environment. Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and electronic purchasing computer applications is required as well as availability to work flexible hours including afternoon and evening shifts and weekends, and share “on call” responsibilities on a rotating basis with other Parks Supervisors. Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act as it applies to Parks maintenance operations is required. You possess good interpersonal, customer service, communication, problem solving, team building, multi-tasking and leadership skills. Valid Class “G” Drivers License.
