Horticulturalist

PURPOSE OF ROLE

Reporting to the Park Maintenance Supervisor, the Horticulturalist will be responsible for horticultural displays, planning/maintenance and arboriculture. This position will also be responsible for tree and plant inventories and competent in plant identification. The Horticulturist will also be responsible for seasonal displays and assist the team with special events. The position may include weekend schedules.

The Horticulturalist will be required to improve Parc Downsview Park Inc.’s mandated sustainability within the functional area.

 

KEY FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain horticultural displays including flower beds, planters and baskets, spring bulbs displays, develop and maintain the park’s tree and plant inventory, develop and assist in the execution of landscape plans as developed from the Park Design;
  • Assist in the development of programs, such as Integrated Pest Management and Maintenance Management System;
  • Coordination of seasonal staff tasks and assignments;
  • Assist with Special Events and Programming, from a logistics and horticultural perspective;
  • Maintain displays such as seasonal holiday lighting, and various themed displays;
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the corporate office plants and displays;
  • Perform duties as may be required to ensure the site is presented in a professional and well-maintained manner;
  • Other duties as assigned

KEY REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

  • Completion of post secondary education in a horticultural or relevant field is required, Certified Horticultural Technician or equivalent is an asset;
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years in the horticultural / ground maintenance field;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Ontario License;
  • Must possess or willing to obtain Pesticide license;
  • Must have a current knowledge and experience working in compliancy to the relevant Federal legislated Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • Knowledge of repairs and winterization of irrigation systems an asset.

  • A team player that is supportive of colleagues and embraces a collaborative approach to problem solving;
  • Computer knowledge in Word, Excel, Navision, Cad or Dyna Scape;
  • Displays high standards of ethical conduct;
  • Comfortable working with and operating a variety of landscape machinery main framed equipment
